BECOME A TEACHER SUPPORT SPECIALIST
Through United Way of the Piedmont's AmeriCorps Direct Service program, you can serve as Teacher Support Specialists at local elementary schools in the Piedmont region of South Carolina, providing opportunities for teachers and students to get the support they need to thrive.
Our AmeriCorps Members spend one academic year in an elementary school where they serve teachers and students through providing small group instruction, supporting social and emotional needs of students, enriching family and school relationships, assisting teachers with remote and e-learning opportunities, and supporting students with one-on-one reading and math assistance.
PROGRAM AT A GLANCe
As a Teacher Support Specialist, you will get the opportunity to:
- Serve part-time in a Spartanburg District 6 or District 7 elementary school.
- Directly serve elementary school teachers and students in order to improve student academic performance.
- Develop a wide range of professional and leadership skills.
- Collaborate with other National Service members on volunteer projects.
PROGRAM OPTIONS
All members will serve until the end of May 2025 with the choice of the below hours breakdown. Living allowance and education award benefits vary based on hours served. Please note that Education Awards are only provided upon successful completion of service.

Responsibilities
Member activities include but are not limited to:
- Providing small group instruction
- Supporting social/emotional needs of students
- Enriching family and school relationships
- Monitoring student progress and attendance
- Assisting teachers with remote and e-learning opportunities
- Supporting students with one-on-one reading and math assistance

- Mary H. Wright Elementary School
- Jesse S. Bobo Elementary School
- Lone Oak Elementary School

If both you and a school select each other, you will be placed to begin service in Fall 2025!
