MLK day of service

Make MLK Day a Day On, not off

For MLK Day of Service, United Way mobilizes hundreds of volunteers across the community to honor Dr. King’s legacy by making MLK Day a day on, not a day off!

The commemoration of the MLK Day of Service is a call to act on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of social justice and equity. This day marks our opportunity to recommit as citizens by volunteering in service to others.

In 2025, over 450 volunteers came together at 20 projects across the community to make a big impact. Read more about the 2025 Day of Service.

Thank you to everyone who served this year! Mark your calendars for next year's Day of Service on Monday, January 19, 2026.

Going back to the first gathering around the flagpole at Spartanburg City Hall over three decades ago, Spartanburg’s citizens have long recognized that Dr. King’s mission lives on in the people of our community and their commitment to a more just and equitable world. Today, the importance of that mission is as evident as it has ever been. In the week leading up the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the City of Spartanburg invites community members to participate in Unity Week, a week of events and opportunities that honor Dr. King's legacy.
