On October 25, 2022, we gathered at The Fretwell in Spartanburg to celebrate our shared impact and reconnect, re-engage, and get reinspired about what’s happening in our organization and the greater community.
Help us celebrate the people who help make our work happen. And, most importantly, please connect to what we're doing and take action.
There are several individuals and community organizations that went above and beyond in their dedication to United Way of the Piedmont this year. Read more below about their inspiring contributions and celebrate them with us.
Presented by Dr. Dawn Bingham
Craig Burnette is an active volunteer with United Way and a well-known community advocate. He serves on the United Way Behavioral Health Task Force and the Homelessness Prevention Taskforce. A Vietnam veteran, Craig later became a psychologist for the VA. His work with veterans today intersects the issues of access to mental health services and homelessness.
Presented by Dr. Laura Barbas-Rhoden
As a partner, PASOS is always very responsive, willing, and eager to help. They are always at the table to collaborate, and not just with United Way, but others in the community as well. PASOS partnered with United Way to make the LatinX Community Health & Resource Coordinator position a reality. That role is unique and one of its kind in the community and was only possible due to their partnership with us.
Presented by Todd Horne
Roger Williams is one of the gemstones of the Behavioral Health Task Force. Roger has brought new energy to the behavioral and mental health assets of the three counties served by United Way of the Piedmont and by the local Department of Mental Health. He has built and strengthened partnerships, introduced new programs, and secured new funding resources -- all of which serve to expand upstream services to reduce the demand for downstream interventions.
Presented by Amanda Richardson
Chunsta is a force of nature who has brought her past experience with the United Way of Anderson to her hometown here in Spartanburg. She is using her gifts and talents to move African American Leadership Society (AALS) into its next chapter. She dreams big and will make a tremendous chair of AALS in the coming year.
Presented by Craig Haydamack
Olivia has been a supporter of United Way of the Piedmont and a Young Leader since 2018. Olivia served as co-chair of the Young Leader Advisory Board during COVID, then stepped into the Chair role during a rebuilding year. She has worked diligently to recruit new Young Leaders and Advisory Board members from within and outside of Milliken, setting up the group for success in the next year and beyond.
Judy is a Spartanburg treasure who brings a wealth of knowledge of women’s issues in our community to her service as the chair of women united. She constantly works to bring new women into our work and engage them in United Way efforts. She is a champion for economic mobility, especially for women, and for making connections among people and organizations in the community.
Sara served as the Financial Stability Navigator at Middle Tyger Community Center. Sara thrived during her year, showing the highest outputs of any member, while also navigating the world of being a student and a mother. She has returned as an AmeriCorps member for a second year, and is doing a wonderful job of assisting her clients in gaining economic mobility.
Marcellus Robbs served with KNOW(2) in Cherokee County. As a fellow VISTA Member shared, “Marcellus is a leader in the community, an example of what it means to be of service to a community, and has shown on numerous occasions that he's integral to the community that he served for this VISTA year.”
We know what we can do when we come together – when we unite. Being involved with United Way means getting connected to opportunities. It means engaging in the issues of our community. It means being inspired, and inspiring others, to take action.
