Join United Way of the Piedmont in supporting literacy in our community by participating in the Prepared to Thrive Book Drive!
Thanks to your incredible support, we collected 1225 books—more than double last year's impact–for our 2024 Book Drive! These donations will help bridge literacy gaps in our community and provide countless hours of enjoyment and learning for young readers.
Access to Books is CRITICAL
We know that by third grade, reading proficiency shifts from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." If children cannot read proficiently in third grade, they fall behind.
In Spartanburg County, 47.8% of third graders are below grade reading level. And in Cherokee County, that number increases to 58.5%. Access to books is critically important to help local children improve their reading abilities. That’s why United Way of the Piedmont is supporting literacy in our community through our Prepared to Thrive Book Drive.

Cherokee County
March 3 - April 4, 2025
Make a difference in Cherokee County:
1) Purchase online by April 4 through our virtual storefront. Simply purchase one pre-selected book bundle (or more!), and we'll take care of the rest!
Bundles are separated by grade and topic and include 3 specially-selected books.
2) Donate in person at Zakary's at 1558 N. Limestone St. Gaffney, SC 29340. Just drop your purchase in the donation bin.
Books will be distributed through First Steps.
Spartanburg County
March 3 - April 4, 2025
Make a difference in Spartanburg County:
1) Purchase books by April 4 at Hub City Bookshop. Leave your purchase with the bookshop and we'll take care of the rest!
Receive 10% off when you purchase one book, and 20% off when you purchase two or more! (Bookshop members will receive this discount in addition to their member discount.)
The bookshop is located at 186 W Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
