Friends,
Which comes first: transportation to get to work or work to pay for transportation? This complex “chicken or egg” situation is one that many families find themselves in because they lack access to reliable transportation, severely limiting their employment options. In fact, lack of transportation is one of the top barriers to financial stability in our community.
For this reason, I’m especially excited about a new Transportation to Work initiative we are implementing through a partnership with Commute with Enterprise. Here’s how it works:
Employers in Spartanburg, Cherokee, or Union Counties can sign up to provide a vanpool for their employees to get to work. Employees at these companies pay an affordable weekly rate to receive transportation to work together. When companies sign up to participate, United Way of the Piedmont subsidizes a portion of the cost of the vanpool. (And if the vanpool starts or ends in Spartanburg County, the City of Spartanburg helps with the cost too!)
This vanpool program is not only a benefit to employees needing transportation; it increases local companies’ ability to recruit and retain employees. It also addresses one of our Bold Goals to decrease the number of individuals living in poverty who are unemployed by 75%.
As we increase affordable transportation options for unemployed individuals, we increase the economic mobility of our community. It’s a win-win in my book.

Paige Stephenson
