Spartanburg, S.C. (August 2, 2023) – Twenty percent of school-age children in the Spartanburg County community live in poverty. For these students and their families, a back-to-school supply list can be a large purchase, causing parents to decide between putting food on the table and sending their child to school without those supplies.
United Way of the Piedmont, in partnership with Duke Energy, held its annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive to provide needed supplies to all seven Spartanburg County School Districts along with school districts in Cherokee and Union Counties.
Local businesses and community members collected over $55,000 in supplies that will help over 2,600 students in our community. Additionally, over 50 volunteers from the community spent multiple days sorting the school supplies and stuffing backpacks so that the schools can easily give a child a fully stuffed backpack with everything they need. Extra loose supplies were also made available to teachers to help supply their classrooms.
Thank you especially to our partners at Contec for collecting over 1,100 backpacks along with loose supplies to equip Spartanburg County students.
Donations and school supplies given to United Way of the Piedmont help students show up ready to learn and succeed, while supporting families who are struggling to make ends meet. Through projects like Stuff the Bus, United Way of the Piedmont and their partners are helping more families reach self-sufficiency so that everyone in the community has the opportunity to thrive.
United Way’s next community project will be its Fall Food Drive in October. If interested in corporate sponsorship or starting an employee giving program at your workplace, contact Alex Moore at: amoore@uwpiedmont.org for more information.
