Spartanburg, S.C. (November 16, 2022) – This year for Homelessness Awareness month and Giving Tuesday, United Way of the Piedmont is launching a fundraising campaign to raise $20,000 for its Homeless Prevention Fund. The fund is unique in that it helps families before they become homeless, creating stability and safety for families in need.
The fundraising campaign has already kicked off with a $5,000 match gift from TC Transcontinental. The Spartanburg branch of the company, based in Canada, was looking to make a local impact in the lives of children and families and was thrilled to learn about the Homeless Prevention Fund. The $5,000 donation will serve as a matching gift to donations from other community members this Giving Tuesday, November 29th, and will help United Way reach the $20,000 goal.
When families get to the point of eviction or service cut-off, the compounded expenses are much higher than the family can pay, and they have an increased risk of becoming homeless. The Homeless Prevention Fund helps families move out of crisis and toward longterm stability through immediate assistance and intensive case management. Approximately $700-1,000 can help one family pay for utilities, rent, and late fees and keep them from ending up on the streets.
Since the fund's inception, United Way has distributed over $225,000 to 315 individuals or families. In the past year alone, 118 families have been stabilized, actively preventing homelessness for 92% of the clients served.
