Spartanburg, S.C. January 23, 2023– Hundreds of local residents stepped up to serve as volunteers on the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday held on January 16, 2023. Joining thousands of volunteers across the country, individuals and groups teamed up with United Way of the Piedmont to work on such projects as clearing trails in local parks, and picking up litter in a beautification effort of a beloved community.
MLK Day, held on the third Monday of January each year, is a federal holiday – for many employees, a day off work. But Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. calls us all to action on this day. To use it as a “day on,” during which we can put our many talents to use to aid nonprofits and those doing good in their communities. To honor Dr. King this year, nearly 300 Spartanburg residents spent over 1,000 hours to make it a “day on, not a day off” by volunteering and getting involved in their communities.
Whether virtually by learning online about Advocacy, or more hands-on, clearing ivy from trees in Duncan Park, everyone’s efforts combined to make this “day on” one that would make Dr. King proud. Thank you, Spartanburg!
