Spartanburg, S.C. February 3, 2023, United Way of the Piedmont’s African American Leadership Society (AALS) hosted its first-ever Legacy Gala. This evening was a showstopper, with dinner, dancing, live music, and a small business showcase.
Held at USC Upstate’s campus in Spartanburg, the Legacy Gala was a night to celebrate philanthropy and the work of AALS. AALS is a Donor Network of United Way of the Piedmont that works to increase awareness of United Way’s work and raise money to support their priority projects like the housing initiative.
For many families, one unexpected expense or one missed income check can totally disrupt a budget. When meeting basic needs is already a struggle, just one major blow can force a family to choose between putting food on the table and paying rent. United Way helps families before things spiral out of control by connecting families to community resources and/or providing rental assistance and the monies raised by AALS will go a long way to help families in need in our area.
Speakers at this inaugural gala included former chair Joey Fowler and the incoming chair of AALS, Chunsta Miller. Amanda Richardson of United Way of the Piedmont said, “The inaugural Legacy Gala put on by the African American Leadership Society (AALS) was a night that celebrated both volunteerism and philanthropy in the Black community. Over $4,500 was raised for United Way of the Piedmont’s housing initiatives, and MLK Day of Service volunteers were recognized for over 550 hours of service. This party with a purpose was a huge success, and we can’t wait to see what AALS does next for our community!”
